An Open Letter to You Who Believe Gay Marriage a Sin,
There was a time about a 150 years ago when many Good Christians read the Bible and argued that the sacred versus contained within it justification for owning black people.
Can you fathom that? I wonder if any of you attend a church in North America that would use the bible to justify owning an African American today?
But now here you are, another generation of Christians using the Bible to justify marginalizing and “Jim Crowing” people into Second Class Citizens.
You believe this so deeply and so thoroughly that like those Christian slave owners you cannot even see it! You actually believe like them that you are morally and righteously sanctified in your belief by your God to do it!! (This is where you insert your “But the Bible Says…”)
However like the Administration of the time there is really only one way to fix it, and that is to legislate and fight for the end of oppression. (hopefully not by force again, but if that is how you will have it.)
Once this legalization of LGBT marriage and rights is complete you can still be haters if you insist on it. You can get hoods and torches together and gather at night but you will NOT be able to practice in the open light of society any longer the kind of refined and falsely magnanimous hatred and repression of other people that you currently do.
Once this is done you will still have the right to believe the bible, you will still have the right to hate people that are different than you. You will even, unfortunate as that might be, have the right to teach it to your children (Christian Home Schooling is huge now!).
Once this is done you won’t have the right to jeopardize other peoples families and their children, nor split asunder their love, nor deny a couple the ability to ease one anthers passing in death, nor keep them from enjoying the security of a spouse’s pension, or even control who can use a tiny little NOUN to describe their togetherness.
And Finally Once this is done If we are lucky in a 150 years another generation of christians will be hard pressed to imagine such a repulsive concept as using the bible to justify denying love between consenting adults the same way most current christians cannot fathom using the bible to justify owning another human being 150 years ago.
